How to Set Up a Laptop Screen Extender (Windows & Mac)

Before You Start: What You Need

Step-by-Step Setup
Step 1 — Identify your connection
Check whether your laptop has a USB-C port that outputs video (look for a DisplayPort or Thunderbolt icon). If it does, you can use a single USB-C cable. If not, you'll connect HDMI for the picture and USB-A for power.
Step 2 — Connect the extender
Single-cable (USB-C): plug one full-featured USB-C cable from the extender into your laptop's video-capable USB-C port. Power and picture travel together.
Two-cable (HDMI + USB-A): connect the HDMI cable for video and the USB-A cable to a spare port for power. Use a powered port or the included adapter if the screen looks dim.
Step 3 — Switch to Extend mode
Windows: press Windows + P and choose Extend. If the screen isn't detected, open Settings → System → Display → Detect.
Mac: open System Settings → Displays. Make sure the arrangement is set to extended, not mirrored (untick "Mirror Displays"). Hold Option and click Detect Displays if a screen doesn't appear.

In the same display settings, drag the on-screen boxes so they match where the panels physically sit. Set each screen's resolution and scaling for comfortable text size, and apply rotation if your extender's panels flip or pivot.

On Windows and higher-tier Macs, a screen extender genuinely is plug-and-play — no drivers, no software. The one exception is pushing past your Mac's native display limit: base Apple Silicon chips (M1, M2) support only one external display, so adding a second panel requires DisplayLink drivers.
